11 February 2013 – FIME, advanced secure-chip testing provider, and Trustonic – formed by ARM, Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) – have announced the qualification of the first GlobalPlatform-compliant trusted execution environment (TEE) product. Trustonic is the first company to successfully release a TEE product with the functional requirements outlined by GlobalPlatform to manage applications on TEE technology.
The TEE is a secure area that resides in the main processor of a mobile device, such as a smartphone. It effectively and securely ensures that sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in a trusted environment. GlobalPlatform – the organisation which standardises the management of applications on secure chip technology – published its TEE framework to drive standardisation of this landscape. This will help to reduce development costs, for example, as application developers will no longer be required to produce separate applications to support multiple proprietary TEE products.
The qualification stamp verifies alignment of Trustonic’s product with two GlobalPlatform Specifications. Firstly, the GlobalPlatform TEE Client API Specification v1.0, which defines the communication between applications running in a rich operating environment and the applications residing in the TEE, and is essential for mobile manufacturers. And secondly, the GlobalPlatform TEE Internal API Specification v1.0 which outlines a set of criteria for the development of trusted applications and is key for application developers.
Jon Geater, CTO of Trustonic, comments: “Trust is such an important factor in today’s connected world as services such as payments, enterprise connectivity and content demand more security to be delivered on mobile devices. This achievement demonstrates the readiness of our solutions to provide a secure framework for industry stakeholders to develop and deliver mobile applications. We are pleased to bring this product to market quickly and effectively, and are delighted to be the first to achieve this qualification.”
Stephanie El Rhomri, New Services Marketing Manager at FIME, adds: “This is a major step towards achieving interoperability in the TEE arena. Testing, compliance and qualification are essential to building a trusted, secure chip ecosystem and we are delighted to be involved in the launch of the first GlobalPlatform compliant TEE product. A number of our clients are working on solutions in this area and we believe demand for our TEE expertise is only going to grow as stakeholders become increasingly aware of the capabilities afforded by this platform.”
FIME and Trustonic are Full Members of GlobalPlatform and are committed to its work. Christophe Colas, VP Product Marketing at Trustonic, is the Chair of the GlobalPlatform Device Committee and Stephanie El Rhomri, New Services Marketing Manager at FIME, is the current Chair of the GlobalPlatform TEE Compliance Work Group.
